I have dealt with IOBits for some time in other products, and my impressions are quite good and reliable, to date. There is always some exposure to total loss. I have a feeling most of these 'hide' programs are that way, although they often protect in different ways. At least this applies to XP versions of the OS, and I don't believe EFS has been revised. As after a disaster, even though you may recreate a user exactly as it was originally, you will still not have access to EFS previously secured files. The native EFS is not a good alternative. I know sooner or later I will lose my files and folders again, so I have taken precautions in advance. So I still use it, but cautiously, and always with an established method for recovery if necessary. In addition to hiding the folders, it randomly renames them so they are not only hidden but difficult to find. However it is far from perfect, as I have lost important directories by way of a few fluke occurrences.

I've used something called FreeHideFolder for some time now. Theoretically you wouldn't even have to hide your files as that is motivated primarily by privacy and adds little in terms of security, but it does satisfy our sense of security and privacy. The only thing you need in terms of security is a strong algorithm combined with a strong password or phrase (even better) with a really high NIST bit entropy (entropy > 45). As far as encryption algorithm goes it's all readily available anyway.

So you see, it really doesn't matter if the algorithm or program code is publicly known. One: you'll still need to figure out what algorithm was used (as TrueCrypt offers several), and two: bruteforce the password.

Yet it's impossible to write software that can decrypt TrueCrypt containers on the fly and indeed it has never been done. Search Wikipedia for Advanced Encryption Standard (AES or Rijndael) for instance. Besides that, all encryption algorithms are fully known and available on the net. Although not GPL-ed it's open source so you can download the code in it's entirety and dig through it learning all ins and outs on how TrueCrypt works.
